The FLOvers floor lamp stands out from other lighting designs with its transformative capabilities. Using a valve principle, the lamp can be adjusted to emit light in different directions - from the top, the bottom, or both. This versatility ensures that the lamp can provide both general lighting and subtle, ambient illumination.
Measuring at 380 x 380 x 1700 mm, the FLOvers floor lamp is made up of several easily assembled parts. The body of the lamp is crafted from semi-transparent organic glass in a "milky" color, giving it a sleek and modern aesthetic. The valves, which allow for the transformation of light direction, are made from a combination of plastic and brushed aluminum composite. The lamp's base and rise are molded together for stability and space efficiency in any living area.
Operating the FLOvers floor lamp is simple and intuitive. By holding the stiffener edge and changing the angle of the valves, users can easily change the direction of the light. Each valve segment can be operated separately, allowing for precise control over the lighting experience. The upper position of the valves is secured by hidden magnets, ensuring stability and ease of use.
The design project for FLOvers began in October 2009 and was completed in early 2010 at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania. Since then, the lamp has been exhibited at various prestigious events, including the Salone Satellite Worldwide Moscow 2010 and the 17th International LITEXPO specialized exhibition of furniture in April 2011.
Denis Orlenok's research for the FLOvers design focused on the fundamental laws of nature, particularly photosynthesis and the effects of light on plants. By studying the opening and closing mechanisms of flower blossoms, Orlenok was able to incorporate these principles into the lamp's construction. The result is a bionic-inspired design that combines functionality, minimalism, and aesthetic appeal.
The FLOvers floor lamp presents a unique solution to the challenge of adjusting the light source. The rotation element of the valves needed to be both lightweight and strong. To achieve this, Orlenok used an aluminum composite material with an additional edge of rigidity that serves as a handle for changing the angle of the valves. Friction is used to secure the primary and middle positions, while neodymium magnets hidden on the edges of the segments and inside the lamp's body allow for attachment in the upper position.
FLOvers is not only a functional lighting design but also a visually captivating piece of art. Its transformational capabilities and nature-inspired aesthetics make it a standout addition to any interior space. With its Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category, FLOvers has been recognized for its innovative and creative approach to lighting design. This award highlights the lamp's contribution to improving quality of life through its incorporation of art, science, design, and technology.
